The Shaftesbury Curriculum

At Shaftesbury Primary School we provide a progressive, broad and balanced curriculum, with a wide range of opportunities for pupils to learn. We have a programme of study for each subject, with clear targets for children to achieve by the end of each year. Each half term, children undertake a new topic, which allows for meaningful cross-curricular links. We also teach discrete units where appropriate. The range of subjects and topics helps pupils acquire knowledge, understanding and skills in all aspects of their education, including the humanities and linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technical, social, physical and artistic learning. It also provides opportunities for children to apply these skills to real life situations, such as local campaigns, running a small business and meeting with local leaders.

The curriculum also contributes well to pupils’ behaviour and welfare, including their physical, mental and personal well-being, safety and spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, through discrete PSHCE and RE lessons, but also through cross-curricular study in all curriculum areas. We organise Special Weeks throughout the year which promote cultural understanding, charitable work and healthy living, whilst still working towards end of year targets. In EYFS, Personal, Social and Emotional Development opportunities are embedded in all aspects of indoor and outdoor learning across the seven areas of learning.

The Shaftesbury Curriculum takes the needs of all pupils into account. We offer a wide range of learning opportunities both in and outside the classroom. We constantly adapt our curriculum to meet the needs of the children in our school, which supports the excellent progress children make at Shaftesbury. It helps children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to prepare for adult life, as we endeavour to instil in them a lifelong love of learning.
