Shaftesbury Primary School PE and Sport Premium

At Shaftesbury Primary School, we are very much aware of the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. We believe that having access to high quality P.E and sport PE has a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all our children. Our Primary School Sport’s Funding will enable us to continue and extend our provision through maintaining our school sports partnership with Langdon Secondary School and member of the Youth Sports Trust. In addition to this, we will use the funding to train our staff to deliver high quality PE lessons; continue to enhance our extended school provision, support and involve the least active children by providing targeted activities and to keep our Sports Schemes and Equipment up-to-date. We also aim to embed physical activity into the school day through active playgrounds, having recently updated our playground equipment to include equipment the children can use to exercise.

What is the Sports Premium?

The government is providing funding of £320 million per annum for the academic years 2021/22 to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The dedicated primary PE and Sport Premium, which was announced in March 2013, and began the following September, goes directly to primary school head teachers so that they can decide how best to use it to provide sporting activities for pupils.

What are we spending the funding on?

At Shaftesbury, we utilise the PE Sports Grant in a number of ways:

1. Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE – We currently have Premier Sports conducting Fencing/ Archery, Gymnastics, Multi Skills, Dodgeball and Cheerleading clubs in school.

2. Paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport – Members of staff are attending Continual Professional Development schemes.

3. Running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games – Shaftesbury currently has seven different sports teams competing in the Borough of Newham, and have been awarded a Silver Award School Games Mark by Sainsbury’s. We use the budget to pay supply teachers for covering class teachers taking children to tournaments.

4. Buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport – We are in the process of purchasing a new school team kit, as well as spare clothing for children who have not brought their own. We continue to spend money on upgrading our PE equipment and PE Schemes of work, and are constantly assessing what we have and what we require to help facilitate top quality P.E. lessons.

5. Providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs – We currently are running 19 after-school sports clubs (seven of which are run by Premier Sports). A designated staff member is also funded to facilitate the daily running of the clubs.

Impact of PE and Sport Premium

This funding has continued to support the school’s aim to continue to raise the profile of sport and encourage activity for all children. As a result:

• PE standards are high at Shaftesbury, evidenced in school data completed by teaching staff on a termly basis.
• Purchasing tracksuits for teaching staff to reinforce the importance of taking part in P.E. for children and adults alike as well as enhancing the profile of PE across the school.
• Use children as Sports Leaders, a role in which they have to apply for, in order to raise awareness and participation in sport across the school.
• All children participate in sporting activities during lunch time
• Eight after school sports clubs are available, with almost a quarter of all children having a space for free.
• Shaftesbury participates in the majority of borough inter-schools competitions.
