Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. Music reflects the culture and society we live in, so the teaching and learning of music enables children to better understand the world they live in.

Music is constantly being composed and performed at Shaftesbury. We believe that every child should be given the opportunity to play an instrument and to raise their voice in a song. Weekly singing assemblies take place. Nursery and Reception have incorporated music and singing into their daily lessons. Whole-class music lessons take place every week from Year 1 to Year 6 with their class teacher. Year 3 are learning to play the Flutophone and in Year 4 they are learning to play the Ukulele. Professional music teachers come to deliver these lessons. In Year 5 and Year 6 our students choose an instrument which they learn for two years.

At the moment, we have children learning flute, clarinet, guitar and keyboard. We have an excellent teaching staff of professional musicians who come in every week to provide the children with this tuition. The instruments are provided by the Mayor of Newham as part of the Borough wide initiative, 'Every Child A Musician', and when the children leave Shaftesbury they get to keep the instruments. We hope that some children will be able to continue playing their chosen instruments at Secondary school.
