At Shaftesbury Primary School we aim to develop our pupil’s competence and excellence in a broad range of physical activities. We encourage all children to engage in competitive sports and activities, have a nominated Sports Leader team, and have seven different before- and after-school sports clubs, along with links to external sports clubs in the area.

As well as this, PE is taught as a discrete subject twice a week. Children will learn vital skills that will prepare them for living and being active in the wider world. These topics which are taught and built upon each year include:

  • The mastery of basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination.
  • Participation in team games.
  • Performing dances.

  • Using running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination.
  • Playing competitive games.
  • Developing flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.
  • Performing dances.
  • Taking part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges.
  • Comparing performances with previous ones and demonstrating improvement.
  • Swimming competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
  • Using a range of strokes effectively.
  • Performing safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.‚Äč
